Academic and Clinical Training
Dr. Steinberg has been in practice helping people like you have the lives they want
for over thirty years. He received his academic and clinical training from some of
the most highly regarded institutions in the country. He completed his undergraduate
education at Johns Hopkins University where he graduated with Honors and was
selected for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He received a Master's and Ph. D.
in Clinical Social Work from the University of Chicago, where his excellence in
clinical work was recognized with the Elizabeth Dixon Award. He also completed
a two year clinical fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry, Michael Reese Hospital,
Chicago, at the time a nationally recognized training center providing both outpatient
and inpatient mental health services.
Professional Affiliations
As an active leader of his professional community, Dr. Steinberg was honored with
two service awards from the Illinois Society for Clinical Social Work. Serving as
a board member and legislative chairperson for ten years, he worked successfully
to make competent, affordable mental health care available to more Illinois citizens.
Among his accomplishments was leading a successful statewide campaign that
resulted in the passage of legislation requiring insurance companies to cover mental
health services provided by Licensed Clinical Social Workers. On the national level,
he played a key role in the landmark case in which the Supreme Court of the United
States extended the right of confidentiality to mental health care provided by social
workers, thus extending the right to confidential mental health services to more Americans.
As a highly regarded clinician and teacher, Dr. Steinberg had made many presentations
on professional values and clinical practice to professional groups. For many years he
taught courses preparing clinical social workers for licensing examinations for both the
National Association of Social Workers and the Illinois Society for Clinical Social Work.
Training and Practice of Inner Humanism
Dr. Steinberg has based his practice on the ideas and ideals of Inner Humanism for
thirty years. Over this time he has been committed to ongoing training and study of
Inner Humanism so that he can apply the advances of Inner Humanism to his work
with adults, adolescents, couples, and so that he can provide clinical supervision
in the practice of Inner Humanism to other mental health professionals. Among the
most experienced practitioners of this original approach, he is a founding member
of the board of the Intrapsychic Humanism Society which for 17 years has organized
educational programs for those interested in learning the principles of Inner Humanism
as well as how to apply them in a variety of clinical settings. As a psychotherapist
with years of training and experience in this modality, he has moderated and taught
many of these programs. He also serves as a consultant to Smart Love Family Services,
an agency whose practice is based on the principles of Inner Humanism.
